Infants often have hemangiomas; vascular birthmarks made up of blood vessels. Treating a vascular birthmark caused by a systemic anomaly or a disease requires a correct diagnosis of the underlying cause. The doctors at AKJ Skin and Laser Centre, Drs Selvam and Nirmala have worked together to treat vascular laser birthmarks for over 20 years. Also, AKJ Skin and Laser Centre, Chennai, is the city's first laser treatment facility.
V-BEAM perfecta, an advanced pulse dye laser introduced to India by Dr Selvam in 2011, is currently the standard gold treatment for hemangioma. Over 11–12 years, AKJ Skin and Laser Centre has helped 100–150 people with vascular birthmarks.
During the treatment, the doctor uses a laser to destroy the abnormal blood vessels under the skin. To provide the care our patients need, we first discuss their preferences with them and their loved ones. We hope that families will have all the data to make an informed choice about the best course of treatment. When we operate on children, they are put to sleep with general anaesthesia so that we can get the job done.
Children who are not put under general anaesthesia will be given goggles-like eye protection to shield their eyes from the laser light. The procedure will begin after anaesthesia.
During the initial consultation, the doctor will examine and set up your child's first pulsed dye laser treatment. The doctor's first examination of your child won't involve giving them any medication. Many birthmarks require anywhere from four to eight separate surgeries to remove. A gap of one month is maintained between sessions. The doctor will likely use a lower frequency or power setting during the initial treatment to gauge how your child reacts to the laser for the first time. Typically, the birthmark is checked for improvement after the sixth session.
In the operating room, we frequently use a combination of pulsed laser therapy and other treatments for patients with complex vascular syndromes. Possible benefits include fewer hospitalisations and an expedited recovery for your child.
At AKJ Skin and Laser Centre, the doctor and staff will go to great lengths to ensure the safety of your child, including the following:
