Inborn vascular malformation results in a birthmark known as a Port Wine stain. Diseases like Port Wine stains should be viewed as progressive conditions that demand immediate medical attention. As with any illness, getting started on treatment as soon as possible is key to having the best chance of success. The Port Wine stain specialists at AKJ Skin and Laser Centre are the first in Chennai to provide comprehensive laser care for newborn, kids, and adults. Drs Selvam and Nirmala have been treating vascular laser birthmarks for over 20 years, making them leaders in the field.
The gold standard of treatment for these lesions is a pulsed dye laser (PDL). Only a handful of locations in the country offer the cutting-edge pulsed dye laser: the V BEAM perfecta. Thanks to Dr Selvam, AKJ Skin and Laser Centre, Chennai, is the first city in India to instal V beam perfecta. About a hundred to fifteen patients from northern and eastern India have been treated at AKJ Skin and Laser Centre for the removal of vascular birthmarks.
Port Wine stains can become increasingly dark and thick over time and even cause unexpected bleeding. Therefore, prompt treatment is essential. The precise location and size of the lesion are also important factors in determining how effective the treatment will be. The best results have been seen with treatments initiated while the patient is still an infant or a young child.
We use a carefully curated arsenal of lasers to remove Port Wine stains and routinely treat infants and toddlers. Laser therapy is performed by our expert dermatologists with or without general anaesthesia. Our Tirunelveli and Chennai locations of AKJ Skin and Laser Center are equipped with the most advanced pulsed dye laser System, V beam, in the world (Candela). Concerning pulsed dye lasers, the Vbeam perfecta is top of the line.
The blood vessels causing a Port Wine stain are typically the focus of a pulse dye laser treatment. The absorbed laser energy shatters the pigment, which also helps normalise the skin's tone and texture. You'll need to undergo multiple treatments to get the best results, each time using different lasers. It is recommended to wait between sessions of laser therapy for about two to four weeks.
Our medical staff evaluate each patient individually under the direction of well-known dermatologist Dr Selvam to determine the best course of action for Port Wine stain treatment.
In our clinic, you can receive treatment with either a topical anaesthetic (EMLA or LMX), local anaesthetic, or no anaesthetic. Treatment begins as soon as possible after birth to ensure the best possible response and outcome. Multiple treatment sessions are usually necessary, and complete recovery is not always guaranteed. The diagnosis, location of the birthmark, and patient age are just a few variables that can affect the time between treatments.
Our research shows that the optimal outcome is achieved after six treatments spread out over a few months. Each treatment lasts a different time, ranging from about 15 minutes on the low end to as long as an hour.
Port wine stain removal with a laser shouldn't be too painful. Most people who have experienced this say it feels like a rubber band snapping against their skin. Many patients can get through their procedures without anaesthesia. In that case, our dermatologists provide some options for topical and local anaesthetics to ease any pain associated with the process.
Unless the area being worked on is extremely large, we rarely use general or topical anaesthesia on infants. We wait until the child is either one or two years old, depending on the topical anaesthetic chosen, before administering it. We sometimes use general anaesthesia for surgery of children who are uncooperative or who have large birthmarks that require a significant amount of time. In most cases, adults can receive a pain-free treatment with just a little topical anaesthesia.
Even though most patients need multiple laser treatments to significantly lessen the appearance of their Port Wine stain, you may see slight improvements after just one session. The initial consultation will be with board-certified dermatologist at AKJ Skin and laser Centre who will get you started on your personalised treatment plan.
Although your Port Wine stain may initially appear purple after laser treatment, this is a common side effect of birthmark removal. In any case, after 7-14 days, this discolouration should start to lighten and fade. Some mild redness and itching may appear around the treated area for a few days, but they should go away independently. Some people experience significant blistering, scaling, or crusting after the procedure.
